I remember when I first heard about Nikoi Private Island. I was living in Singapore at the time and sitting around a dinner table when this unimaginable paradise island was mentioned. It was said to be just a couple of hours away, that no planes needed to be boarded to get there, that the food was fresh and the beaches pristine. It sounded too good to be true, and honestly, it nearly is, but I assure you – it’s all true!

Singapore is a wonderful place to live, but sometimes you need a break from the non-stop action. A weekend on a paradise island is about all you need to recharge your batteries, and Nikoi Private Island must be one of the best places to do just that. At just two and a half hours from Singapore, this island is truly a weekend paradise.

In this guide, we will take you on a journey through what to expect on a weekend trip to Nikoi Private Island.

History of Nikoi Island

The history of this island is nearly as intriguing as the island itself. Legend has it, and I’m told this is at least mostly true, that early in the 2000’s a group of friends that were all living and working in Singapore found out about the island and decided to build something truly unique.

Fast forward a few years and they purchased the leasehold and constructed the resort, finally opening to the public in 2007. The owners of the island still regularly travel to the island, so you could be lucky enough to meet one of the founding friends on your stay.

Planning your weekend getaway to Nikoi Island

By now you may be getting the idea – Nikoi is special, and that means many people go back over and over again. The island is very small, with just 15 private villas, so accommodation books out quickly, often months in advance. The first thing you need to do if you want to visit this haven is book your accommodation. Once your dates are locked in you can start planning the rest of your trip.

Getting to Nikoi

Getting to Nikoi Island from Singapore is simple, no airports are involved! To travel to Nikoi you take the ferry from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal in Singapore to Bintan Island. The ferry takes around one hour.

Before booking your ferry, confirm with Nikoi which ferry times they meet for the remaining part of your transfer, this will ensure you avoid having a long wait in Bintan.

On arrival on Bintan Island you will be welcomed into the VIP transfer lounge at the terminal. At the VIP terminal you will be met by your transfer driver who will drive you approximately one hour across Bintan to the speedboat meeting point. From there you will take a 30-minute speedboat ride over to Nikoi island.

The entire journey should take no more than around two to three hours, depending on your ferry timing. Make sure to book your ferry tickets to Bintan Island at least a week in advance.

Entering Bintan Island from Singapore

Bintan is part of Indonesia, so you will need to abide by international travel requirements to travel from Singapore to Bintan.

First and foremost, you’ll need a valid passport with at least six months’ validity left from the date of entry into Indonesia. In addition, you’ll need to complete passport control upon arrival in Bintan, which involves presenting your passport and any necessary travel documents to immigration officials.

It’s also worth noting that visa requirements vary depending on your country of origin, so be sure to check whether you need to obtain a visa before traveling.

This island is just different – while they have a serious commitment to eco-friendliness that doesn’t mean they skimp on luxuries or exceedingly high costs.

The island’s commitment to eco-friendliness extends to having its own desalination plant and solar farm. The villas are built to reflect the island’s idiomatic architecture while minimizing their impact on the environment. The staff on the island also takes part in education programs designed to minimize the island’s carbon footprint.

When you combine this with the opportunity to visit Nikoi without having to fly, you can really enjoy your stay without harming the environment.
