Enjoy Nature: 5 of the Best Hikes in Houston
During the COVID pandemic, I developed a passion for hiking. It was my escape and the best way for me to take care of my mental health during periods of isolation. When I moved to Houston after the pandemic, my first thought was – but there is nowhere to go hiking and connect with nature!
Boy was so wrong, and thankfully so! After connecting with a Women’s Hiking Group, I soon learned that Houston is home to some fantastic hikes, parks in Houston where you will forget that you are in the middle of the fourth-largest city in the United States.
In this article, I’ll share my five favorite places to hike in Houston when I want to reconnect with nature. But first, let’s take a look at some things you should consider before heading out on your hike.
Finding a Hiking Trail that’s right for you
Finding suitable hiking trails in Houston can be a daunting task. With so many great options, how can you be sure you’re picking the right one? Here are a few of my tips to help you out:
- Do your research. Before heading out on a hike, ensure you know as much as possible about the trail. You should consider the level of difficulty, distance, and what kind of terrain you can expect.
- Consider your fitness level. Not all hiking trails are created equal, and some are more challenging than others, so make sure you pick a trail appropriate for your fitness level.
- Bring a friend or meet new friends. There are plenty of active hiking groups in Houston that welcome new members every week. Joining a hiking group is a great way to meet some new friends.
- Know your limits. If you’re not used to hiking, don’t try to tackle a challenging trail on your first try. Start with an easy hike and work your way up gradually.
- Be prepared for anything. Always bring plenty of water and snacks, and dress appropriately for the weather. And don’t forget to bring sunscreen and a hat if it’s sunny!
5 of the Best Places to Hike in Houston when you want to reconnect with nature
Now that you know how to find suitable hiking trails for you, here are some of my favorite places to hike around Houston:
Memorial Park
Memorial Park is an excellent option for those who want to connect to nature but don’t have time to head out of town.
The park is home to over 15 miles of trails, many of which connect, allowing you to set a course that suits your fitness level. Once you head down these trails, don’t be surprised to find yourself looking around and thinking that it’s hard to believe you are in the heart of one of the US’s largest cities.
The trails change with the seasons, from dense green foliage to stark winter tree lines. Memorial Park is great for spotting small birds and mammals like rabbits, squirrels, and birds.
The Buffalo Bayou Park
Hiking the Buffalo Bayou Park loop is one of my favorites, particularly at sunrise.
The paved trails wind along Buffalo Bayou, opening out to some of the most stunning views of downtown Houston you will find anywhere. The Buffalo Bayou trails a beautifully maintained and house a variety of unique art installations located in different parts of the park.
You will find beautiful wildflowers along the paths during the spring and summer months. Most hikes in this park can expect to run into some friendly squirrels along the way, ensuring you get a dose of nature in the city.
The Terry Hershey Park Hike and Bike Trail
Terry Hershey Park’s Hike and Bike Trail is the perfect destination for outdoor lovers. Enjoy a stroll in the shade of its towering trees, or pick up the pace by taking a vigorous bike ride along 50 acres of paved and natural surfaces, connecting to 9 miles of trails along Buffalo Bayou.
The trails are multi-use and can be busy, but the wide paths and open parks allow solitude and quiet time. The Anthill Bike Trails provide a more challenging option with dirt trails that wind in amongst the trees.
The Houston Arboretum
Hiking at the Houston Arboretum is a great way to escape city life and reconnect with nature. Several trails offer spectacular views of the area’s many species of plants, birds, and other wildlife.
For a leisurely stroll, there is a 1.5-mile trail that winds through an urban forest filled with various types of vegetation and trees. To get a few more steps in, try the 3-mile Natural Area Hike with boardwalks taking you off the beaten path. Finally, for those looking to connect with nature, there is a Nature Center Hike which includes birdwatching overlooks and walking trails leading out to wetlands and backwoods.
My favorite time to hike the Houston Arboretum is around 4 pm when the heat starts to ease. The many Armadillo that call the Arboretum home tend to be very active at this time, making for a great nature experience.
Whatever your preference, there’s something for everyone at the Houston Arboretum, allowing hikers to get outside their comfort zone while also connecting more deeply with nature.
White Oak Bayou Greenway Trail
The White Oak Bayou Greenway Trail is an absolute must for anyone looking for a unique and memorable experience in Houston. This 10-mile-long stretch of nature is the perfect place to take some time away from the hustle and bustle of daily life as a scenic, wild landscape surrounds you.
Not only can you get some great exercise in, but it’s also a fantastic place to feel the peace and enjoy beautiful views that put most other destinations to shame. So if you’re searching for a picturesque spot with endless possibilities, you know where to go!
