Best hikes in oregon: The Trail of Ten Falls
Welcome to Silver Falls State Park, a spectacular gem nestled in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon. The park is a true paradise for hikers, nature lovers, and outdoor enthusiasts with its lush forests, captivating waterfalls, and endless outdoor activities. The highlight of this park has to be the Trail of Ten Falls.
Confession – I knew nothing about Silver Falls State Park or the Trail of Ten Falls when I recently visited Oregon on a road trip across the US. Someone mentioned it to me in passing, and I decided to check. Boy, am I glad that I did! This trail is a must-see for any adventurer looking for a challenging and memorable hike.
Preparing for the Trail
The Trail of Ten Falls is a 7.4-mile circular trail rated moderate and can take up to 4 hours to complete. As the name implies, this trail provides hikers with a breathtaking view of 10 majestic waterfalls, each with its own distinct character and charm. As you traverse the trail, you’ll be treated to the sight of cascading waterfalls, unique rock formations, and gorgeous foliage that changes with the seasons.
You can complete the entire loop at 7.4 miles or take several shorter routes, visiting one or more falls at the park. The whole Trail of Ten Falls is a loop that traverses the park’s main lake, South Falls and offers side trails to the other nine falls. The total elevation gain is 1,273 feet, so it’s an excellent option for novice and experienced hikers.
For those looking for a very short but nonetheless stunning hike, you can take either the short 1-mile loop to South Falls or a slightly longer South Falls hike that will take you behind the South Falls and takes about 30 minutes to complete.
Make sure to have the right gear, such as comfortable hiking shoes, water, food, sunscreen, and a hat, if you plan to take on the whole trail. You’ll also want to take a camera to capture the stunning Falls views.
Lastly, it’s important to note that the trail may be closed or hazardous during winter due to snow and ice.
The Waterfalls
The Trail of Ten Falls takes hikers on a breathtaking adventure through, as you would expect, ten waterfalls. The falls range in height from 27 feet to 178 feet, making for stunning views along the way. One of the unique features of this hike is the opportunity to go behind some of the falls along the way, providing a spectacular way to experience the falls. You may get a little wet behind the falls from the water spray, although this can be a nice reward during summer.
Here’s a comprehensive overview of each of these ten falls, what to expect at each one, and some fascinating facts.
1. South FallS
The first waterfall on the trail is South Falls, a mighty 177-foot cascade that offers hikers an up-close and personal look at the power and beauty of this natural wonder. You can walk behind this waterfall, and you’ll be surrounded by the mist and spray of falling water. The South Falls is one of the most photographed waterfalls in Oregon, and you will soon see why.
If you are limited on time, you can see this waterfall by taking a short stroll from the South Falls parking lot. The walk is less than a mile; your visit will have been worthwhile even if this is all you do.
2. Lower south falls
Hikers will find Lower South Falls on the downstream side of South Falls. Standing 93 feet tall, Lower South Falls is a beautiful v-shaped waterfall. You can stand at the observation deck and enjoy its stunning beauty.
3. Middle north falls
The third waterfall is Middle North Falls, a 106-foot-high beauty with a unique hemlock tree growing right at the waterfall’s edge. The water falls around the trunk of the tree, making it an excellent spot for photos.
4. Drake Falls
Drake Falls is a small waterfall that drops a few feet in a wide flow pattern. This waterfall is less than 10 feet tall, but it’s still a beautiful stop along the trail.
5. Lower North Falls
Lower North Falls is a 30-foot waterfall that offers hikers an excellent place to take a break and admire the scenery. You can reach it via a short side trail and a bench to sit and rest for a few minutes.
6. Double Falls
As the name suggests, Double Falls is actually two waterfalls side by side that flow along a granite cliff, offering a stunning display of nature’s power. The two falls plunge from the top of the cliff, and you’ll likely hear its roar before you see it.
7. Winter Falls
Winter Falls is a seasonal waterfall that flows only in winter or early spring. This fall is a narrow veil that tumbles 134 feet down a cliff face. It’s particularly stunning to look at when there is snow around.
8. North falls
North Falls is a 136-foot waterfall that is particularly unique because of the large cave behind the waterfall. You can walk behind the curtain of falling water and see the hollowed-out chamber behind the falls.
9. Middle South Falls
Middle South Falls is another stunning waterfall that drops 94 feet, offering a breathtaking view of nature’s handiwork. The view is particularly amazing from the rocky outcrop on the trail bend.
10. Upper North Falls
Upper North Falls is the final waterfall on the trail, an intimate 65-foot-high waterfall nestled in a lush forest. You’ll find a charming picnic area at the top of the waterfall.
